‘Educational guidance for seminar classes

In contrast to "clinical medicine," which aims to diagnose and treat diseases, "preventive medicine" refers to theories and measures to eliminate the causes of diseases and prevent their onset or exacerbation. However, in contrast to primary prevention (health promotion), secondary prevention (early detection and treatment) and tertiary prevention (prevention of worsening of specific diseases and rehabilitation) are mainly carried out in medical institutions. Effective preventive measures cannot be taken without understanding of the problems in the clinical field. Therefore, in order to acquire a wide range of knowledge within a limited time and to understand the actual field of medical care and welfare, the students in this seminar are required to prepare for each lesson by on-demand lectures on Waseda Moodle. During the seminar, students are required to ask questions and discuss the lecture contents, and also to make presentations on the contents of textbooks, papers, and documents. However, in the event that students are unable to attend the seminar due to unavoidable circumstances such as an athletic expedition, they will be able to work on assignments based on the on-demand lectures, thereby balancing their extracurricular activities. In addition to the above, our laboratory is investigating methods for measuring immunocompetence and collaborating with clinical hospitals, research institutions, and health-related companies to conduct basic and applied studies on the regulation of stress, immunocompromise, inflammation, and aging. Students may also participate in these research activities.

Special attention in education and teaching (Guidance policy)

We respect freedom of thought and initiative, but we also require that each individual take responsibility for his or her words and actions and be sincere in his or her approach, as we may handle personal information related to health and illness and visit medical sites and research institutions. Research can be tough and hard, but we welcome positive and cooperative people who can turn it into fun. Preventive medicine is an applied discipline; therefore, it is advisable to take as many life science and medical-related subjects as possible to acquire a basic knowledge of the subject, but if you are motivated, you will get through it.
